Lights Out – Literally— For a Great Night's Sleep

Summertime means neighborhood barbeques, weekends at the pool and lots of ice cream. During the summer season, the days seem to go on forever as it stays light outside longer. But for some people, natural and artificial light prevents a sound night of sleep. Real Simple offers a few ways to achieve your best sleep:

  • Limit your light intake before bed. Turning off the computer and TV helps prepares the eyes and brain for rest.
  • Darken the bedroom with blackout shades. Fitting the drapes or shades to the window will ensure a dark and comfortable room.
  • Dim the light around you. Turn down the LED light on your alarm clock— a nearby bright light can get through your eyelids and disrupt sleep.
