An article on USAToday.com reports that zopidem, the active ingredient in several sleep medications, increased by almost 220 percent from 2005 to 2010.
A report released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), ntoes that 19,487 emergency room visits were related to zolpidem in 2010. It also reports that about 74 percent of patients are 45 years or older, 68 percent of which are women.
