Your Mattress Is Gross…Really

Your Mattress Is Gross…Really.

According to Ohio State University researchers, 10% of an unprotected pillow's weight can be comprised of dust mites, dust mite droppings, and dead skin after only 2 years of use. If you think that's gross, just imagine what's in your mattress!

Left unprotected, a mattress can accumulate all kinds of nasty elements. Why? Because it acts as a sponge for a wide range of unhealthy and unsanitary things that can accumulate, little by little, over the thousands of nights you sleep on it. Want to learn more? Read on:

  1. Dust Mites. According to studies conducted by the Ohio State University, a standard unprotected mattress may house 100,000 to 10 million mites. And it’s not just your mattress. Up to 10% of the weight of a 24-month-old pillow can be comprised of dead mites and their waste products. Speaking of the dust mite waste, in addition to being generally unsanitary, it is a powerful allergen. In fact, according to Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, dust mites are a leading cause of allergies in your home.
  2. Sweat. Regardless of your gender, how hot you keep your bedroom, your health, and other factors, practically all of us sweat while sleeping. That perspiration (which includes sodium) has to go somewhere, and it’s usually into your mattress.
  3. Accidents. While it’s not something we like to talk about, urinary incontinence affects millions of American adults. Urine, which is loaded with salts, bodily waste, and water can be quickly absorbed in the mattress. Even if you are quick to take action, the damage may be irreversible, as unprotected mattresses can be difficult to dry, often maintaining internal moisture for prolonged periods. What’s worse is that urine can encourage the growth of mold and mildew, while attracting mites and other parasites, like fleas and bed bugs, especially if they are already in the home. Moisture plus growth and pests can add a great deal of weight to an unprotected mattress, not to mention allergens and pests.
  4. Pets. Not only do our pets carry dirt and insects, but the dander (dead skin cells) that pets shed, saliva, and urine can exacerbate common problems (such as bed bugs) when they penetrate an unprotected mattress. These factors can make your mattress and pillows comfortable home for pests like dust mites and bed bugs. So, if you have a habit of sleeping with cats or dogs in the same bed, chances are they may contribute some weight (in the form of uninvited guests) to your unprotected mattress.
  5. Mold and Mildew. Warmth, humidity, and moisture are the primary causes of mold and mildew growth in your home, including a mattress. Even if your bed faces short-term water exposure and you fail to dry it out completely, chances are that you are encouraging the growth of these dangerous contaminants that not only contributed to the weight of your mattress but cause serious health problems.
  6. Stains. Stains from foods and drinks can also get soaked into an unprotected mattress quickly, only to accumulate and add to the mattress’s weight. Like other sources of moisture, stains can also promote mold, mildew, and parasites.
