Colleagues salute honoree Lilly as passionate, professional leader

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Bedding industry colleagues saluted Ed Lilly as a tenacious, passionate and professional mattress leader, employing the full range of his skills to boost bedding sales.

John Rachid, president of Protect-A-Bed, said Lilly stood out with his ability to change the mindset at Serta.

“As a leader at Serta, Ed achieved success by believing he could improve and grow the Serta brand by focusing on changing the culture from a ‘fixed’ mindset to a ‘growth’ mindset throughout the organization and owners,” Rachid recalled. “When he took over Serta, Inc. in the early ’90s, the Serta brand was considered a transactional third world brand — a product for a price. Ed was determined to change the mindset and perception of the brand, and he did just that.”

Larry McKay, senior vice president of sales at Protect-A-Bed, was impressed with Lilly’s team-building skills.

“To manage the growth at Serta, whose volume more than tripled under his leadership, he put together a team of industry leaders,” McKay said. “Susan Ebaugh, Jeff Van Tuyle, John Rachid, Bill West, Mark Quinn, Roxanne Franklin, Bob Sabalaskey and Alan Eisenberg were a few members of that strong team. Under Ed’s leadership, Serta was well-positioned to later become the industry’s leading brand.”
